Text

Between 1405 and 1433, the Chinese emperors Yongle (1402-1424) and Xuande (1425-1435) dispatched seven maritime expeditions on ships ten times the size then in use in Europe to Southeast Asia and East Africa. These voyages were commanded by Zheng He, a Muslim eunuch, who has been called the first great figure of the age of exploration, the Vasco Da Game of China and the Chinese Columbus.

Gavin Menzies has recently argued that these Chinese explorations extended to America, but the evidence is skimpy. The Chinese withdrew from oceanic ventures shortly after this period.
