Historical Note

Principal research vessel of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, acquired in 1951 from the Navy; used by Maurice Ewing and Bruce Heezen to collect ocean bottom cores in 1950s. Built in 1923 as the Hussar and remained on active service until 1981, by which time it had logged 1,225,000 nautical miles of seagoing.
