A Florentine banker who worked for the Medicis in Portugal in 1470s; in 1474 estimated the distance westward from Lisbon to China to be only 5000 miles in a map sent to Portuguese King Joao II in 1474; Columbus in correspondence with Toscanelli and knew of his calculations. The actual distance is more like 15,000 miles.
