Writer and naturalist, raised and lived in Concord, Massachusetts; associated with Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalist Movement. His first published work recounted a canoe trip with his brother called "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack River," appearing in 1849. That same year Thoreau made three vistits to Cape Cod, to more closely "see the sea." His reflections on these travels appeared posthumously in Cape Cod, published in 1864.
