The Treaty of Alcacovas between King Alfonso V of Portugal and Isabella of Castile/Ferdinand of Aragon cedes to Portugal all exploration and trading rights along the West African coast and south of the Canary Islands, but confirms Spanish ownership of the islands themselves. Later modified by Treaty of Tordesillas
