Text

The naturalist Ewin Way Teale was born in Joliet, Illinois, the son of a railway enginneer. His early summers were spent in the dune country of northern Indiana, from which his interest in the natural world can be dated. he graduated from the Quaker-sponored Earlham College in 1922 and earned an MA in English literature from Columbia University in 1928. By then he had begun writing fdor magazines, especially Popular Science Monthly, in which he began to write on nature and especially insects.By 1940 he was supporting himself and his family as a free-lance nature writer. In the next three deacdes he became perhaps the best known nature writer in America and a noted memoirist. Rachel Carson was a big fan of his. During the 1940s he lived on Long Island; thereafter, rural Connecticut, where he died in 1980.
