Text

Harvard-trained and Harvard-teaching (1916-1955) American historian, he wrote extensively about New England, including the history of harvard University, about maritime exploration and about the American navy. His influence greater on the general reading public than on his fellow historians. A life long sailor, he served in the Navy in WW II and reached the rank of rear admiral. Author of The Maritime History of Massachusetts (1921) and The European Discovery of America: The Northern and Southern Voyages (1971). Identified as the most famous exemplar of "the old maritime history," not least for his hands-on familiarity with and love of sailing.
