Text

Alexandria-based author of the culminating work in geography and cartography of the Ancient world; usually called his Almagest (title of its Arabic translation) or Geographia ; rediscovered in early 1400s; published in printed form in Latin throughout Europe in 1482. Known to Columbus at the time of its publication, who accepted his underestimation of the earth's circumference (off by 20%). Ptolemy also incorrectly depicted the Indian Ocean as an enclosed sea, with no opening into the Atlantic.
