A bright star which in northern hemisphere is visible and fixed in the northern sky within a degree of Celestial North; can be identified by first locating the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and projecting up from the outer lip of the cup about 5 times the length of the outer cup edge. <br> <br> The altitude (angular distance from horizon) of Polaris coincides with the latitude of the observation point on earth.
