Seasonal winds, especially as applied to those of the Indian Ocean, that vary in direction by the season and the relative temperature of the ocean and the land masses of South Asia. From April to September a low pressure area in the Himalayas produces a wind from the west blowing to the northeast ["the west monsoon"]; from October to March the prevailing wind blows from the northeast to the southwest ["the north east monsoon"]
