Text

Flemish cartographer and maker of mathematical instruments. In 1569 designed a map that depicted lines of longitude as straight lines parallel to each other, thus making the world's oceans appear as a grid with latitude lines horizontal and longitude lines as vertical. This projection allowed compass courses to be drawn as straight lines, thus facilitating the drawing of compass-generated courses. It also produced distortions as one moved away from the latitude at which the projection was made.
