Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the World

Text

Text The voyage of the Portuguese sailor in 1519-21 aboard the carrack Victoria in the employ of Spain constituted the first recorded circumnavigation. Magellan, however, was killed in Philippines, after successfully negotiating an east-west passage around Cape Horn by sailing through a strait separating the southern tip of the continent, the island Tierra del Fuego, and the mainland, that later came to be called the Magellan Strait. News of Magellan's feat reported by Sebastian del Cano, one of the survivors to make it back to Spain in 1522.
