Succeeded to the throne of Portugal in 1385, after establishing a marital link with the English court. Authorized the 1415 assault on Ceuta, on the Mooccan side of te Straits of Gibraltar, led by his third son, Henry. Active in pressing Portuguese interests in the Atlantic and west coast of Africa.
