Son, grandson and brother of Anglican clergy. To sea in the navy at 13; saw action in the American war and in Caribbean. Protege of John Jellicoe and admirer of Edward Hawke. Participated in Battle of Cape St. Vincent(1797) as a captain, commanded British Mediterranean fleet in defeat of French in Battle of the Nile (1798); crucial involvement in the Battle of Copenhagen (1801); killed in victory over combinaed French-Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805). Known for his aggressiveness and willingness to trust the initiative of his captains.
