Text

Cousin of Walter Raleigh and part of the West Country gentry. Schooled at Middle Temple. Led 1585 7-ship expedition to Roanoke as captain of the Tyger when Raleigh kept by Elizabeth from leading it. Returned in 1586 with re-supply convoy. Later occupied with fighting in Ireland and against the Spanih Armada; killed in a naval engagement in 1591.
