Jefferson� tapped Gallatin to be his secretary of the treasury
In 1808 [Gallatin] sent Congress a bold proposal to spend $20 million on the construction of turnpikes and canals in every section of the country�

President Madison� [appointed Gallatin as] American ambassador to France� The government of Louis XVIII rebuffed his repeated attempts to win compensation for losses to American shipping caused by the Napoleonic decrees
