Historical Note

Largest ships used by Americans during the Revolution. Smaller than ships-of-the-line, which had multiple gun decks. 19 built in six separate yards (Portsmouth, Boston, Providence, NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore) and served in Revolutionary War. Basic design by Philadelphian Joshua Humphreys. The Randolph, launched in 1776 and lost in action in 1778, was a instance of this class.
