Definition

Movement of wind-driven subsurface water in layers and, in northern hemisphere, to the right of wind direction. The process by which each layer of water in the ocean drags with it the layer beneath, but with declining force, until it loses its effect at the bottom of the Ekman layer (about 200 meters).Water movement in the northern hemisphere is to the right, producing a clockwise movement, as a result of the Earth's eastward rotation.
