Skilled cartographer who charted much of Canada's east coast in the late 1750s; later placed in charge of three scientific expeditions to the Pacific, the first in 1768 aboard the HMS Endeavor to Tahiti in 1768. His second expedition, aboard the Resolution and Adventure, took him below the Antarctic Circle. His third expedition was launched in 1776, aboard the Resolution and Discovery, ranged from the South Pacific to the Pacific Northwest, including a visit to Hawaii, where Cook was killed by natives.
