Description

former capital of the Byzantine Empire and of the Ottoman Empire, since 1930 officially called Istanbul� It was founded (A.D. 330) at anc. Byzantium as the new capital of the Roman Empire by Constantine I, after whom it was named� After World War I the city was occupied (1918�1923) by the Allies. In 1922 the last Ottoman sultan was deposed and Ankara became (1923) the new (cap.) of Turkey.
