Ohio�s 2d largest city and the center of the state�s largest metropolitan area, it is an ore port and a Great Lakes shipping point� Cleveland grew rapidly after the opening of the first sect. of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1827 and the arrival of the RR in 1851� Its central location midway bet. the coal and oil fields of Pennsylvania and (via the Great Lakes) the Minnesota iron mines spurred its industrialization; it was there that John D.
