4th generation of Providence Browns; the older son of the James (1666-17xx), who started the Browns in maritime commerce, and brother of Obadiah (1714-1762), with whom he expanded the family's commercial interests into several maritime-related enterprises. Early career as a shipbuilder and captain with close familiarity with the markets of the West Indies. His four sons -- Nicholas, Joseph, John and Moses -- carry on the family businesses into the 19th century, by which time they have become primarily engaged in manufacturing.
