Event Summary

Franco-American blockade of British at Yorktown

Date

September 1781

Description

French naval blockade of British at Yorktown follows on Admiral de Grasse's successful routing of a smaller Britich fleet in "The Battle of the Capes" at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. This resulted in the isolation of the British army under Cornwallis at Yorktown and its defeat by a Franco-American army under Washington and Rochambeau.
