Continental Congress Debates Fisheries Issue

Description

New England members of Continental Congress, led by Marbleheader Elbridge Gerry, press Congress to insist that any peace treaty with Britain guarantee American access to Newfoundland waters. Southern delegates unwilling to make this a condition, although urged that such access be argued for by appointed negotiators. Later, John Adams successfully secured American "liberty" (not "right") to fish in these waters.
